Having finished one mini-campaign of Silent War and in the process of reading Clay Blairs U Boat Wars, here are a few suggestions:
1) Solo ships which I see are mentioned in one of the posts could actually be a positive transit event. Low numbers in the early War (as represented by the War Period table might yield solo ships and roll for tonnage) and higher numbers more attacks on U-boats in transit might need a chart from 0-15 still rolling 0-10 but allowing for larger modifiers. So in War Period 1 a 2 modifier might apply and 1 and 2 might yield a solo ship. Whereas in War Period 4 a + 4 would eliminated the chance of a solo ship but increase transit attacks by planes etc.
2) Expanding on Supper Skippers (or Aces) by giving them different bonuses. For example: one might get 2x attack strength which represents the captain's drive to get closer to targets than the normal captain, or 2x defense might represent a particularly crafty captain in evading counterattack, or 2x tonnage sunk which might represent the captains luck or ability to target larger ships, or just the extra combat round.
2B) Allow Aces to transfer to newer boats which was often the reward to successful captains.
3) Day versus night attacks. Add another tactical decision but one that U-Boat skippers often made. Add one from TDC for submerged attacks and subtract one or two for night surface attacks (which were very common) but require the submarine to reveal one additional ship and it must be an escort.
4) Besides radar unflipping escorts, night attacking U-boats were often spotted but then lost by the escort, so in the reattack round a night attacking U-boat automatically gets to unflip an escort.
5) Transit Events particularly the Bay of Biscay and North Sea must get more difficult either an area modifier or WP modifier. Options for subs to use cautious travel plus a Snorkel bonus might help to offset as was the case later in the war.
6) Work Condors into the sequence much like Ultra to add to the sighting chance of a convoy and/or additional ships drawn.
7) Varients will be a tremendous replay and what if possibility. The major factor affecting the early German effort in the Atlantic was the lack of submarines and delay in increasing production. Some what if scenarios here would be very welcome.
Again these are just some thoughts I have about ways to add to the game within the current game structure by modifiers, ways to handle War Events, etc. Only the Condor phase would be added much like the Ultra phase.
